SCHOOL INDOOR AIR QUALITY · UK

Healthier classroom air for UK schools

SchoolAirQuality.uk helps schools, academy trusts, nurseries, colleges and local authorities measure, understand and improve classroom air quality. From CO₂ and ventilation assessments to continuous environmental monitoring, our work supports healthier learning environments and stronger pupil and staff wellbeing.

№ 01 — Why it matters

Air quality shapes how pupils learn, concentrate and feel at school.

Pupils and staff spend the majority of their working day inside classrooms. Indoor air quality, ventilation rates and thermal conditions in those rooms directly affect comfort, concentration and overall wellbeing — and have become a recognised priority in UK school operations.

We help schools translate this into something practical: where the classrooms with the most pressure on ventilation are, which spaces show elevated CO₂ or particulate levels during the school day, and where simple operational or capital changes can make the biggest difference.

Our work focuses on measurement, evidence and clear recommendations. We do not promise health outcomes that depend on individual circumstances, and we do not sell ventilation equipment or filtration products — our role is to help your estates and leadership teams make informed decisions.

№ 03 — Environmental factors

The classroom environmental factors we measure.

Each factor below interacts with the others. Our school assessments combine short-term targeted testing with longer-term continuous monitoring where that produces a more accurate picture of daily classroom conditions.

CO₂

An indicator of classroom ventilation, linked to concentration and cognitive load.

Particulate Matter (PM2.5 & PM10)

Fine particles from outdoor sources, traffic and indoor activities.

VOCs & Formaldehyde

Emissions from furniture, cleaning products, paints and refurbishments.

Humidity & Mould Risk

Moisture balance affecting comfort, condensation and mould growth.

Thermal Comfort

Temperature stability and overheating risk in classrooms and halls.

Airflow & Ventilation

Effective fresh-air supply across naturally and mechanically ventilated spaces.

№ 04 — Healthy learning environments

From healthy classrooms to whole-school improvement.

A healthy school is more than a building that meets minimum ventilation guidance. It is one where ventilation, temperature, humidity and pollutant control are managed together — and where the school can demonstrate that management over time.

Our work supports practical improvement planning: identifying the rooms that need attention first, the operational changes (window-opening schedules, plant maintenance, occupancy patterns) that can be made quickly, and the longer-term ventilation or estate investments that justify capital spend.

Short discovery call to understand your school, concerns and timescales.

  2. Step 02

    Site review

Walk-through of classrooms, halls and plant rooms to scope monitoring needs.

  3. Step 03

    Monitoring & testing

Targeted IAQ measurement and continuous monitoring where appropriate.

  4. Step 04

    Findings

Clear summary of where ventilation, CO₂ or pollutant levels need attention.

  5. Step 05

    Recommendations

Practical, prioritised actions for estates, leadership and maintenance teams.

  6. Step 06

    Ongoing monitoring

Optional continuous sensors with reporting for term-by-term oversight.
